Each year on the second Friday of March, the world celebrates Solar Appreciation Day. A day to take a moment and appreciate how far solar energy has come and all that it has done for us. As a homeowner, this is undoubtedly a day to commemorate. But what is solar power, and why should you care? Let's look back on how we got here in the first place.

What is Solar Power?

Solar power is energy derived from sunlight or other radiant energy sources, such as the sun's infrared radiation. This energy can be used to generate electricity through the use of photovoltaic (PV) systems or to heat water through the use of thermal collectors. It's also used for industrial applications such as desalination and space heating/cooling. The goal of using solar power is to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and reduce our carbon footprint.

The History of Harnessing Solar Power

The history of harnessing solar power goes back thousands of years, when people used the sun's rays to light fires and cook food. The first known use for generating electricity from solar power was in 1839, when French physicist Alexandre Edmond Becquerel discovered that certain materials produced electric currents when exposed to light. In 1954, Bell Laboratories created the first practical photovoltaic cell to convert sunlight into electricity with 6% efficiency. Since then, solar cells have become increasingly efficient, with modern-day panels reaching efficiencies of over 20%.

How Does Solar Power Work?

Solar PV systems convert sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity using semiconductors such as silicon wafers inside individual photovoltaic cells. When light hits these cells, electrons are knocked loose from their atoms, creating an electric field within each cell that produces direct current (DC) electricity which can then be converted into alternating current (AC) electricity using an inverter before being sent out onto the grid or stored in batteries for later use.

When Were Solar PV Systems Invented?

The first commercial application for solar PV systems was in 1956 when Bell Labs developed a system to power small appliances such as calculators and watches. In 1977, Sharp Corporation unveiled its own version of a commercial system capable of powering small appliances up to 400 watts in capacity. Since then, solar PV systems have been continuously improved, becoming more efficient, powerful, and cost-effective than ever!

How Can I Switch To Solar?

Switching to solar has never been easier! All you need is an assessment by a qualified installer, such as DFW Solar Electric, who can provide you with a quote based on your location and panel size requirements, so you know exactly what your investment will look like upfront - no surprises! Once your system is installed, they'll take care of the paperwork, so all you have to do is sit back and watch those energy bills drop!

So there we have it - a brief overview of Solar Appreciation Day and why homeowners should consider switching to solar power in their homes! Harnessing solar power has come a long way since 1839, with modern-day panels capable of reaching efficiencies of over 20%. Not only does switching to solar help shrink your carbon footprint, but now it's more affordable than ever before, thanks to improved technology and government incentives! This holiday marks the perfect opportunity for homeowners across America - make sure you join in on celebrating Solar Appreciation Day 2023! Happy harvesting!
